The former limestone quarry, which supplied Algoma Steel in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, from 1905 to 1936, is now part of the Fiborn Karst Preserve. Fiborn Karst Preserve, Michigan Karst Conservancy The Michigan Karst Conservancy is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting awareness and preservation of karst geological features in Michigan. Fiborn Quarry was created by a partnership of the Duluth, South Shore & Atlantic Railroad in 1904. This small company town was built to house the workers (homes and a boarding house), offer a school and a general store.

Fiborn Karst Preserve Remnants of Fiborn Quarry include the powerhouse, left, foundation of the building in which crushed limestone was sorted and loaded into railroad cars, center, and the building where locomotives were stored and maintained. Fiborn Karst Preserve The 480-acre preserve, purchased by the MKC in 1987, was the site of a limestone quarry from 1905 to 1936 which supplied high-calcium limestone to Algoma Steel in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. (See the Fiborn Quarry History page for details.) The Fiborn Karst Preserve is managed by the Fiborn Karst Preserve Committee of the MKC. It is the purpose of the MKC to manage and protect karst areas for scientific study and conservation education. These purposes are implemented by making MKC Preserves available, without charge, for public uses that are compatible with long-term preservation.
